Catch 22 (Serie - Clooney, Hulu)

Based on the acclaimed Joseph Heller novel, Catch-22 follows the adventures and misadventures of a US air squadron in Italy in World War II. Catch-22 premieres May 17.

Christopher Abbott is Yossarian, a bombardier, whose frantic obsession every time he goes up on a mission is "to come down alive". His odds of success at such a simple aim keep getting worse, because Colonel Cathcart (Kyle Chandler) keeps raising the number of missions the men have to fly. More than the retreating Germans, the real enemy for Yossarian and his rag-tag bunch of friends is the bureaucracy of the military, inverting logic at every turn. The pinnacle of this is Catch-22, a military by-law which states that if you fly your missions, you're crazy, and don't have to fly them; all you have to do is ask. But if you as not to, then you're sane, and so you have to fly them. George Clooney stars as the barking mad, parade-obsessed Scheisskopf. Hugh Laurie is the mellow, slightly checked-out Major de Coverley.

Clooney directs the six-episode series, along with Grant Heslov and Ellen Kuras.

Vielleicht hat das ja nicht jeder so auf dem Schirm: In Deutschland kann man die Serie über Starzplay streamen, das wiederum über Amazon buchbar ist (erste 14 Tage umsonst). Sollte für die 6 Folgen reichen; ganz sauber (mit Clooneys Stammsprecher) synchronisiert ist das auch, obwohl die Serie diesbezüglich als anspruchsvoll gilt.

Kann man sich auf dem Weg oder sonstwie durchaus mal antun, auch wenn der Stoff nicht neu ist bzw. gegenüber dem Film (soweit ich mich daran erinnere) nicht allzuviel Neues bringt. Technisch sauber gemacht, mit ein paar vermutlich echten B25, optisch fast schon ein wenig zu attraktiv mit dem leicht aufdringlichen Gelbton. Die inhaltliche Balance zwischen Satire, Tragödie und realem Kriegsgrauen stimmt auch, ein paar Szenen - vor allem die mit Clooneys "General Scheisskopf"- sind brüllend komisch, auch wenn das Lachen einem sehr fix im Hals stecken bleibt. Etwas Probleme habe ich mit der Hauptfigur; klar, dieses penetrante "ich will nach Hause" ist der Dreh- und Angelpunkt der Geschichte, trotzdem fällt die Einordung zwischen "Rebell" und "Drückeberger" da  schwer. Zumal die Sympathie des Zuschauers durch einige der Aktionen, die Yoyo dafür unternimmt, dann doch auf eine gewisse Probe gestellt wird; und allzu engagiert gespielt wird der von Christopher Abbott auch nicht.

Trotzdem 7/10.
